Quercetin

Quercetin is a flavonol (a subclass of flavonoids) and is a potent antioxidant, providing cardiovascular protection by reducing oxidation of LDL cholesterol. Quercetin is one-half of the rutin molecule, another flavonol and is the more active antioxidant.

Some of the healthy benefits of flavanoids such as quercetin include the following:

Antihistamine action - useful in reducing allergy symptoms and inflammation associated with various forms of arthritis. By inhibiting the production and release of histamine and other allergic/inflammatory substances, quercitin helps reduce allergy symptoms such as a runny nose, watery eyes, and hives.

Antioxidant action - quercitin scavanges damaging free radicals which can damage cell membranes, interact with genetic material, the development of a number of conditions including heart disease and cancer. It is thought that antioxidants such as quercetin can neutralize free radicals and help prevent some of the damage they cause.

Heart Disease

Studies suggest that flavonoids such as quercetin, may help reduce the risk of atherosclerosis (plaque build up in the arteries that can lead to heart attack or stroke). The antioxidant action appears to protect against the damage caused by LDL ("bad") cholesterol and may help prevent heart disease.

Eye Conditions

There is thought to be a link between free radicals and the development of eye disorders such as cataracts and macular degeneration. By neutralizing free radicals, flavonoids like quercetin, may play a role in the prevention and treatment of these eye conditions.

Fibromyalgia

As with studies on arthritis, those who switched to a vegan diet high in flavonoids like quercetin, experienced improvement in their symptoms.

Prostate Health

Reseach also suggests that quercetin can improve painful symptoms in those with chronic prostatitis. There are also some preliminary findings suggesting that quercetin may inhibit the growth of prostate cancer cells in test tubes.

Cancer

For years now, the flavanoids in fruits and vegetables, such as quercetin, have been linked to cancer prevention. Recent studies support this view. In animal studies, flavanoids like quercetin show an ability to inhibit cancer cell growth in test tubes. These tests include cancer cells from lung, colon, breast, and prostae tumors.

Safety Issues

Quercetin appears to be well tolerated by humans. As with any supplement, allergic reactions are possible. Consult your health care practitioner if you are taking cancer fighting drugs.
