Selenium

Functions

Selenium is an essential trace mineral needed to activate glutathione peroxidase, an antioxidant enzyme which may help protect against cancer.

It has been shown to induce DNA repair in damaged cells, and to inhibit the proliferation of cancer cells.

This mineral is also essential for healthy immune functioning. In some studies, supplementing with selenium has been shown to reduce the incidence of viral hepatitis in selenium-deficient populations. Selenium is also needed to activate thyroid hormones.

One double-blind trial also showed that selenium supplementation improved the motility of sperm cells and increased the chance of conception in infertile men.

Recent research suggests that this mineral, taken orally, may also offer protection against sunburn.

Selenium Deficiency

Soils in certain areas are deficient in selenium and people who eat primarily foods grown on selenium-poor soils are at risk for deficiency. There is an association between low levels of selenium and people with heart disease. Similarly, people with AIDS have been reported to be depleted in selenium. Research shows people who are deficient in selenium have an increased risk of developing certain types of rheumatoid arthritis.

Food Sources of Selenium Include:

Brazil nuts, brewer's yeast, broccoli, brown rice, chicken, dairy products, dulse, kelp, liver, molasses, onions, salmon, seafood, torula yeast, tuna, wheat germ, and whole grains.
