Silicon Functions This trace mineral plays a role in making and maintaining connective tissue. It is needed to keep artery walls, bones, cartilage, and tendons healthy. Silicon is also thought to be beneficial to the immune system, and may be beneficial in treating allergies, heartburn and gum disease. Silicon is useful in counteracting the effects of aluminum. It is vital to healthy skin, hair and nails. Silicon Deficiency Since silicon is not an essential mineral, deficiencies have not been established, however, it is thought that inadequate amounts may result in problems with teeth and bones as well as hardening of the arteries. Food Sources of Silicon Include: Onions, wheat, oats, millet, barley, rice, beetroot, leafy green vegetables, whole grains, root vegetables, and beer. Herbal Sources of Silicon Include: Alfalfa, horsetail.
