Common Cold
The common cold is a contagious viral infection of the upper respiratory tract. From sniffles and sneezes to a sore throat and annoying cough, this pesky condition usually catches up with us all at some point during the year.
Most colds are caused by rhinoviruses which are in invisible droplets in the air we breathe or on things we touch. More than 100 different rhinoviruses can infiltrate the protective lining of the nose and throat and trigger an immune system reaction that makes for sore throats, headaches, runny noses, etc.
Symptoms of the Common Cold
Often the first symptoms of a cold will include a tickle in the throat, a runny or stuffy nose, and sneezing. There may also be loss of appetite, headache, sore throat, cough, mild fever, fatigue, and muscle aches.
For those in good health, with strong immune systems, a cold will clear up on its own in a few days.
Treating the Common Cold
Since colds are caused by viruses, antibiotics are of no use. Some people use over the counter decongestants and antihistamines to try to ease the cold symptoms. However, these may cause unwanted side effects - especially in children.
Natural treatments for the common cold aim to ease coughs, fever and breathing, boost immunity, and provide comfort.
