MSM, Methylsulfonylmethane
MSM, short for Methylsulfonylmethane is a form of organic sulfur. It is found naturally in a variety of fresh foods, but is easily destroyed with even moderate processing. For this reason, deficiencies are common in those who don't regularly eat an abundance of whole, unprocessed foods. MSM is necessary for collagen synthesis, such as in skin, hair and nails. It is sometimes called the 'beauty supplement' as it is believed to relieve stress, asthma, arthritis, inflammation, constipation, candida, etc. It is also used to detoxify the body and increase blood circulation, reduce muscle cramps, and back pain, help muscles to heal, increases energy, alertness, mental calmness, and the ability to concentrate. MSM is known for it's role as a free radical scavenger, and is used to relieve allergies, to help the liver produce choline, control stomach acidity, and speed the healing of wounds. It is also thought to be useful in the treatment of intestinal parasites by making it difficult for parasites to cling to the intestinal tract. MSM reportedly helps with hypersensitivity to drugs. It is important for carbohydrate metabolism, and apparantly increases body’s ability to produce insulin. Taken orally this supplement has been shown to be effective in relieving symptoms of gastrointestinal upset, inflammation of the mucous membranes, and pain associated with musculoskeletal system disorders. It is noted for its exceptionally non-toxic nature for both children and adults, and the elderly.
