Why Organic Foods Are Better

With over 1 billion pounds of pesticides and herbicides being sprayed on US crops alone each year, we can assume that we are ingesting these potentially toxic substances.

Though, the long term effects of this are not yet fully understood, there is a very disturbing picture starting to emerge from the studies being done on the link between these types of toxins and neurological disorders, cancers, etc.

In a world where we have little control over many of the toxic substances our families are exposed to, buying organic food is one way we can decrease our exposure.

What Does Organic Mean?

Organic means foods that are grown in safe soils and have not been sprayed with synthetic chemichals.

On average, organic produce is significantly higher in healthy minerals - sometimes up to 90% - 100% higher than conventionally grown. , produce that is sprayed with chemicals can be up to 40% higher, than organically grown food.

Foods that contain some of the highest amounts of toxic pesticides include:

Peaches

Appless

Grapes

Strawberries

Pears

Raspberries

Winter Squash

Spinach

Potatoes

Green Beans

Many local farmer's markets have food that is grown without the use of cheimcals. Getting to know your local farmers is often an affordable way to eat healthy produce, eggs, milk and cheese.
