Functions

Phosphorus is an essential macromineral which has a vital role in the structure and function of the body, including bone mineralization. About 85% of phosphorus in the adult body is in bone. It also plays a major role in biological molecules such as DNA and RNA, the main structural components of all cellular membranes.

Phosphorus is needed to balance and metabolize other vitamins and minerals. It is also essential for normal heart and kidney functioning, and helps speed the healing of broken bone.

Phosphorus Deficiency

Inadequate amounts of this mineral can result in numbness, anxiety, bone pain, bone fragility, stiffness in the joints, fatigue,irregular breathing, irritability, weakness, weight change and loss of appetite.

Food Sources of Phosphorus Include:

Meat, poultry, fish, eggs, dairy products, nuts, and legumes.

Herbal Sources of Phosphorus Include:

Burdock root, and slippery elm bark.

The recommended daily allowance for phosphorus is 700 mg daily.
