Potassium

Functions

Potassium is an electrolyte mineral found in body fluids which helps balance the acid/alkaline system, transmits electrical signals between cells and nerves, and enhances athletic performance. This mineral works with sodium to regulate the body's water balance, and is crucial for healthy heart functioning and to guard against hypertension and stroke.

Potassium also helps maintain proper muscle function, energy storage, and nerve stability. Adequate amounts are needed for enzyme and hormone production.

Potassium helps oxygenate the brain for clear thinking and controls allergic reactions.

Potassium Deficiency

Insufficient amounts of this mineral can result in numbness, muscle cramping, anxiety, bone pain, bone fragility, stiffness in the joints, fatigue, irregular breathing, irritability, weakness, weight change and loss of appetite.

Those taking high blood pressure medication are vulnerable to potassium deficiency.
